History of the Twitterthon
In November of ’09 the concept of the “Twitterthon” was created by CEO/Founder Darah Bonham (@darahbonham on Twitter). A Twitterthon is when a sponsor agrees to pay $1 for every new follower that @abolishcancer receives over an 18 hour time period on Twitter. 100% of the proceeds go towards the cancer charity at the end of the day based on the amount of the sponsorship. Since these began almost 2 years ago, over $50,000 has been raised for various cancer charities BY TWEETING & FOLLOWING!
The beauty of the Twitterthon is that not only does the sponsor receive good PR and the cancer charity receive donations, but the thousands of tweets throughout the day create a great deal of AWARENESS which is a critical factor in helping to end this disease. The power of social media is evident in the growth or our site as followers from around the world have joined the movement.
The @abolishcancer Twitterthons have become popular and supported by thousands of individuals including over a 100 influential celebrities. A unique synergy has formed with celebrities, cancer charities and followers that allows for a tremendous amount of exposure in the fight. Erin and Kendra Andrews, Dina Manzo, Alyssa Milano, Michael Smith and Jeri Ryan are just a few of the celebrities we have partnered with in the past. This celebrity partnership propelled @abolishcancer to begin Celebrity Twitterthons which will help influential stars support the movement and raise even greater awareness and $ for cancer causes. Check out the main page to see the numerous celebrities getting involved to help end cancer.
Here is a sample list of the more memorable Twitterthon awareness campaigns we have run over the past 2 years. If interested in being a sponsor or partnering as a celebrity in a future Twitterthon, email DBonham@abolishcancer.com
